What perlite does for your plants

  • Loosens the soil

The porous grains stop soil from compacting. The roots get air, and waterlogging and root rot become less common.

  • Holds water without waterlogging

Perlite holds water in its pores and in the gaps between grains and lets excess water drain away – for more even moisture.

  • Sterile and pH-neutral

Germ-free from the factory, with no nutrients and no effect on pH. Ideal for propagation and cuttings.

  • Light and long-lasting

100 litres of dry perlite weigh only about 10–13 kg. Perlite does not rot and can be reused.

One material, many uses

From the windowsill to the greenhouse – perlite suits any place where roots need air.

Frequently asked questions

All questions and answers
How much perlite should go into potting soil?

For most houseplants and balcony plants 10–30%, as a rule of thumb 1 part perlite to 4 parts soil. Cacti tolerate 30–50% mineral content, and cuttings will also root in pure perlite.

Is perlite toxic?

According to safety data sheets, perlite is not classified as a hazardous substance. Its fine dust can, however, irritate the eyes and airways – so moisten it before use. Perlite is not intended to be eaten.

Which grain size do I need?

Fine perlite (approx. 0–3 mm) suits sowing and seed-starting compost, medium (approx. 2–6 mm) suits most uses, coarse (approx. 4–8 mm) suits airy mixes and drainage. If in doubt, medium is the most versatile.
